Get your cups of tea ready for the new NHL season because when it kicks off on September 29th it will do so in… London, England! The action will take place at the brand new O2 Arena in London. The defending Stanley cup champions, the Anaheim Ducks will take on the Los Angeles Kings for a pair of games.

This will be the third time in NHL history that games are played outside North America. The first time was at the start of the 1997-98 season, when the Ducks and the Canucks traveled to Tokyo, Japan as a showcase for the 1998 Nagano Olympics. The NHL repeated the experience the following season with the Sharks and the Flames.

So far the response from English fans has been very good as both games are already sold out. After all, hockey is just like football (soccer). Except that it’s played on a smaller field… covered with ice… and with a puck instead of a ball. Now all they have to do is substitute the names Beckham and Rooney for Pronger and Blake. Easy, mate.

As a preparation for their overseas trip, the Ducks and the Kings will also begin their pre-season a few days early, as they will play each other on Thursday and Saturday.
