Posada’s Unreasonable Reaction Earns Suspension

By Beaker’s alien master.

These are weird, if not insane times. You can’t call a socialist a socialist, you can’t criticize a President lest you be branded a racist and you can’t throw at hitters anymore.

Juvenal would have had a good time with this.

The latest hitter to take issue with being hit by a pitch is New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada.

I don’t know at what point hitters became such divas but it’s become annoying to watch them stare out at the mound with a “dontcha you know who I am?” type of look.

Enter Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Carlson who threw behind Posada. He wasn’t throwing at his head but Posada wasn’t taking it. Which is weird because, he and the Yankees should have known it was coming considering Blue Jays hitter Aaron Hill was hit by a struggling Mark Melancon (unintentionally) with a far more dangerous pitch earlier in the game. In a larger context, given how Toronto pitching has struggled against New York, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened at all.

In baseball, it’s tit for tat. Eye for an eye like in the old testament. Hitters are knocking a pitcher around? It was (’was’ being the operative word) understood a pitcher was going to show some mustard and pride and brush a hitter back. Every sport has its “unwritten” laws of nature. Baseball is no different.

But apparently someone wants to change this code. Sorta like how politicians want to regulate human flaws.

After getting hit Posada did his tough thing reportedly saying “You don’t want to do that” to Jays catcher Rob Barajas. The benches cleared but nothing happened. Posada took his base and it should have ended there.

Instead, Posada eventually came around to score and as he crossed home plate he chose of his own free will to raise his forearm (maybe an elbow) at Carlson who was covering the catcher.

Long memory that cat has. Seriously though, if Posada connected that could have been ugly. Naturally, the benches brawl only this time punches were exchaned.

In the end, both players have been suspended (originally for four games) for three games. Personally, Posada should have received five - one for the careless forearm and a second one for being unreasonable. Or a baby - depending how you look at it.

In fact, I know the league had to nail both but Posada should be the only one suspended.

He’s 100% at fault.
