Canadian hockey fans in Quebec City are getting all giddy at the prospect of the NHL returning to the oldest city in North America.
I’m not.
Why?
Because, it’s been reported that the proposed plans to build a new $400 million arena will be funded entirely by taxpayers with $50 million from the municipal government and the balance to be split between the provincial and federal government.
I know this is par for the course as millionaire owners always find a way to get the government to subsidize them but this case is too much for me to support. It’s ridiculous and unacceptable if you ask me.
If the owners are convinced it can work in Quebec then they should put up some of their own, if not all, money. The proverbial put your money where your mouth is.
I don’t see this here. Do you?
Moreover, the man who sold the Quebec Nordiques is inexplicably involved in negotiations. As of yet, Marcel Aubut has no plans to spend any of his money to bring hockey back to the NHL.
That’s all you need to know about this gig.
All these guys will get rich off the backs of taxpayers.
No thanks.
They already have the money, it’s not like we’re gonna pay more tax. I’d rather see them help building an arena than building opera, or art museam.
Who has the money? The bottom line is the owners put up no money, no risk and get 100% of the rewards?
I thought people would be fed up of that. Guess not.
That’s an interesting assertion. I’m curious, why is an arena better for the society at large than say, an opera house or art museum?
Yes. Only in Canada are arenas considered more important than museums! In Quebec, once upon a time, it was Churches that occupied our architectural landscape, now it’s hockey arenas!
I ‘zaggerate of course but you get my point.
Hello,
I believe that is would be absolutely awesome to have the Nordiques back in Quebec but I would be against taxing the average joe more than he is now.
So, since it is a private business for profits, it has to be financed privately, on the other hand, since this could also generate a lot of taxes for goverments, then they should finance it as well but not by taxing more but by taking into consideration future taxes that will be generated.
Thank you
