For a record sixth time, Egypt is crowned champions of Africa with a 1-0 victory over four-time champion Cameroon. Mohamed Aboutraika scored the game's only goal in the 77th minute to propel Egypt to victory. Naturally, the streets of Egypt were full of song and dance celebrating their heroes.
Now it remains to be seen if the Egyptians can finally translate this into World Cup success. Despite their African dominance, Egypt have not qualified for the World Cup between 1994 and 2006. Cameroon, South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia and Senegal all have achieved more success than Egypt at the World Cup. Go figure.
Anyway, thus concludes the 2008 African Nations Cup - A tournament still faced with an identity crisis. Among the problems that marred this edition of the tournament included low attendance including the final (Ghanians only came out to support their team), poor pitch conditions and the arrival of a crime syndicate attempting to fix matches.
Clearly, Africa is full of talent. Unfortunately, it's not enough to pack the stadiums.
