The testing for F1 continues. This week the teams are at Barcelona.
With the first GP coming soon in Australia, who is looking good, and who isn't?
First and foremost, apologies on the lack of updates, right now that’s over with, on with testing news.
McLaren - The Woking team have been showing serious pace at Barcelona. Both days of testing so far have had the McLaren Mercedes team showing their form.
The fastest man on the track, squashing talk that he would not get on without the TC to help, is Lewis Hamilton. He set a time Tuesday of 1.21.234, with is nearly a second quicker than he managed on Monday. His team mate joining him on the top of the charts, and not far off the pace either. Heikki Kovalainen set a 1.21.434 time in his 68 laps around the track.
Ferrari - Kimi and Filipe have been on track, as (see pic left) has the might Michael Schumacher.
Kimi set the third fastest time yesterday, with Felipe setting fifth fastest.
The Ferrari is certainly looking strong, but perhaps not quite as strong as in the January testing, with even Michael being quoted as saying he believes neither Ferrari or Mclaren are quicker than each other.
All we need to know now, is who has worked hardest over the winter, so they can win in Australia?
Williams - The Williams car is showing good speed at the test as well and is certainly the suprise package so far this season.
Nico Rosberg has shown great pace and control in the sessions so far, as has the car, with the young German setting the ‘best of the rest’ time, actualy ahead of Filipe in fourth.
Kazuki Nakajima is however seeming to struggle with the full on race drive, as he has yet to get anywhere near matching his more experienced team mate. Nico’s time in the Williams is however a second off the pace set by the McLaren cars, so there is still room to improve.
Red Bull - David Coulthard was injured (he is back driving today), so Sebastian Vettel was been brought in from the sister team to test, and showed his pace well.
Sebastian set the seventh fastest time, and was nearly a second quicker than Mark Webber in the second Red Bull car yesterday.
The Red Bull car is still lacking in outright pace it seems, but is a lot more natural looking in the track when compared to last years car. The team may start to show some form this year.
Force India - Fisi seems to have found his feet at the old Jordan team again. Fisi set the sixth fastest time yesterday, showing the old gun still has some dry powder in the chamber, if motivated correctly.
The team’s new car is not that great a departure from last years car, but seems to behave itself much better on track, lets hope that all the new tallent that has joined the team is starting to turn it around.
Vitantonio Liuzzi showed less pace yesterday, only managing the tenth fastest time, but having a fast team mate should get him motivated to show his talent to the team.
BMW Sauber - The BMW team have had it hard, they finished the championship third (second after the DQ of McLaren) last year, and were deamed the best of the rest. However this year so far in testing they have had a number of issues.
Robert Kubica had another of those issues crop up on him this week, with his first run disrupted with a car failure.
Tuesday saw him run a solid eighth place, but this is not the form the team were on last year.
Nick Heidfeld managed a fifteenth spot on the timesheets. BMW must be looking into what they need to do before Australia to get their pace back. Or have they not yet shown their true form?
Honda - ‘Team Green’ Honda have shown that they are getting back onto some sort of pace. The cars have been a lot better than their 07 ones so far in testing, but then again they looked OK last year before the season started.
Jenson popped a 1.22.659 in yesterday, so only 1.5 seconds off the McLaren pace, much better than the 2+ second deficit the 07 car had (at it’s best moments).
Rubens ran in fourteenth yesterday, but looked OK while doing it, so perhaps the changes to the team in the off season are starting to show.
Toyota - After glimmers of speed, the team seem to be struggling a little. We know the engine and gearbox can go quickly (see Williams), but the car just does not seem to be producing the pace.
Jarno could only manage a twelfth spot on the timesheets, and his young team mate Timo Glock only managed the last (19th) spot.
Timo however seemed to be struggling with setup “After all the disruptions due to the weather it was good to get a full day of running at last. But it was a difficult day for me. We spent the day looking at set-up but with all the changes we struggled to make the most of the improved track conditions and the extra grip. So we will have to analyse why that is overnight and aim to make a step forward tomorrow.” so perhaps he will be quicker today.
Toro Rosso - Sebastien Bourdais was the lone runner in the STR yesterday, he managed to put his car in the 16th spot on the timesheets.
The STR however will benefit from the work that Sebastian Vettel did in the Red Bull (at least aero wise anyhow), so all is not lost.
With the sister team showing well, it seems strange that the Canadian has not shown better pace yet in the STR.
Time will tell if he made the right move coming into F1, from a sport were he was running at the front.
Renault - Let’s have a look at how the Anglo-French team are doing. Fernando showed well on day one of the test in the challenging weather conditions, but yesterday with the track in better shape, he seemed to struggle.
Thirteenth spot on the timesheets is not what we are used to seeing from the double world champion.
And that alone is not really the worrying part, the Renault seemed to be nearly 2 seconds slower than the McLarens.
Fernando really needs to start pulling the team together, and hopefully getting the car into a raceable shape before Australia.
His young team mate Nelson Piquet Jr only managed to be slightly quicker than the struggling Toyota of Timo Glock. So all is not looking rosey in the Renault camp.
