This has not been a good year for Italian teams in the continental
tournaments. Between Champions League and UEFA Cup, there is but one
Italian team left standing: Fiorentina. And even they are in danger of
being eliminated from UEFA as they head for Holland to take on PSV
Eindhoven. The two sides played to 1-1 draw in Tuscany with the Dutch
coming away with the all-important away goal heading back home. As a point of interest, the last Italian side to win UEFA was Parma in 1999.
In Champions League, AS Roma were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Manchester United. The giallorossi were not able to find the back of the net over two legs falling 3-0 on aggregate. In fact, neither of AC Milan, Inter Milan or Roma were able to score against their English counterparts. For those of you scoring at home that's ZERO goals in six games against Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Ouch and awful.
That being said, I wouldn't despair. I trust Serie A will bounce back. The dominance they had during the 1990s was so devastating that a downturn was bound to happen. The 21st century saw the return of Spanish dominance and now it looks like we're seeing the English Premier league take over. Of course, Barcelona will have something to say about this.
At this time, as soccer fans, we should just sit back and enjoy the success of English sides.
Serie A fans can take solace in the fact that taken as a whole, Italy's big sides are capable of fielding world class Italian players at every position. Same for La Liga and Spanish players. Can we say the same for EPL sides?
Furthermore, the Italian national side's future also looks bright.
On the pitch things look fine. Though on a more philosophical level some of us may agree with Roberto Baggio's concerns about the direction of European soccer as a whole. Off the pitch, things remain trying. What Serie A needs to do is clean up its image. Specifically, they need to curb fan violence and shady back room deals. Then again, UEFA, FIFA, the FA and other professional leagues including the EPL all have to face corruption in some form.
So yes, it's possible if the Viola fail to beat PSV, Serie A will have no teams in the semi-finals of two big tournaments.
However, all is not lost. There's always next year.
